Ludlow Maternity Unit reopens Speaking to BBC Radio Shropshire this morning, Jill Banks, Women and Children’s Care Group director for Shrewsbury and Telford NHS Trust, announced the maternity unit was fully reopened from today. She said that the health trust can’t continue to use the workhouse because of its poor condition. The new space in the main building, Stretton Ward, is “absolutely beautiful”.

Ludlow maternity unit crisis to be resolved in next ten days says health chief

On Tuesday, Ludlow councillors wrote to the NHS executives that run services at the Ludlow Community Hospital site. We have received a detailed response from Simon Wright, who runs the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH). SaTH runs midwifery-led services in the county. We have also heard from Jan Ditheridge, chief executive of Shropshire Community Health NHS Trust (ShropCom). This is the trust that runs other services on the hospital site, including the closed Stretton Ward. Here is what Jan and Simon told us.

Our letter to health executives on sudden closure of Ludlow maternity ward

Yesterday, we wrote to Simon Wright, chief executive of Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH), and Jan Ditheridge, chief executive of Shropshire Community Health NHS Trust (ShropCom). We are concerned that a lack of joined up working prevented switching midwifery-led maternity services from one part of Ludlow hospital to another. We are not expecting maternity services to reopen in the old building. It is not fit for purpose and the repair bill will be huge. But there is plenty of space in the modern hospital building. Our letter asks why maternity services were not moved to the empty Stretton Ward.

Ludlow councillors call for Stretton Ward at Ludlow Hospital to be reopened immediately after maternity closure

On Friday, Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust announced that the midwifery-led unit at Ludlow will close indefinitely while its structural integrity is investigated. Ludlow’s unitary councillors are now calling for Stretton Ward at Ludlow Community Hospital to be reopened to accommodate maternity cases. Stretton Ward was closed without notice in July 2015 shortly after it had been completely refurbished.
