The trustees of the Assembly Rooms have submitted an application for planning permission for extensive work on the property (15/01958/FUL; 15/01959/LBC).

This scheme is a winner for Ludlow.

The trustees’ plans are to move the main entrance from its current location on Mill Street to Castle Square – which was until recently the entrance to the museum and visitor information centre. The space that formerly hosted the museum will become a café or restaurant. The room that hosted the visitor information centre – and is now a pop up art shop – is to become a combined booking office and tourist information centre.

Moving the entrance to Castle Square will mean that more visitors to Ludlow will discover the Assembly Rooms and book in for films and live events. The café or restaurant will generate urgently needed funds to replace income lost from the Arts Council and Shropshire Council grants. The front of the building will be much improved with doors and windows more in keeping with the historic building.

This is a good application which will help secure the future of our town’s premier arts venue.
