It is bad news if you are about to give birth over New Year. Both Ludlow and Bridgnorth maternity led units are suffering overnight closures, with Ludlow closed on New Year’s Eve. This is a taste of the future. The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust is planning to close midwifery-led maternity units, including Ludlow, overnight. Campaigners have set up a parliamentary petition calling on our local maternity units to remain open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Please add your signature here…

Public meeting to discuss new Rocks Green supermarket plans on 3 January
My colleague Councillor Vivienne Parry is calling a public meeting to discuss the revised plans for a superstore and petrol filling station at Rocks Green on the outskirts of Ludlow. The meeting will take place from 6pm at the Women’s Centre in Ludlow town centre on Tuesday, 3 January. The centre is off Church Walk adjacent to the Rose and Crown. Everyone is welcome. Please park in the car parks. Shropshire Council is currently consulting on the revised plans. Comments must be submitted by 12 January. The proposals are expected to be considered by the South Planning Committee in February or March.
Move over Winchester, Ludlow is so much better
This article first appeared in the Shropshire Star on 22 December 2016 as part of a feature on Ludlow. It’s the time of year for publishing lists. Lists of the top Christmas tunes. Compilations of the best ways to cook brussel sprouts – if there are any. And, courtesy of the Halifax Bank, we have a gazetteer of the top 50 places to live in Britain. But where, oh where is Ludlow in the Halifax list? It is nowhere to be seen. Surely this is an oversight? We must be better than Winchester, the overcrowded and fast expanding town that heads the Halifax’s rankings. And as for the Orkneys, which the Halifax claims is the second best place to live, Ludlow has just as bad weather.
Shropshire Council launches new consultation on revised Rocks Green supermarket application over Christmas
Blackfriars, the speculative developer behind the proposals for a superstore and petrol filling station at Rocks Green has produced new plans. You have until 12 January to respond. That’s just three weeks, a short period given the holiday season, though longer than the two weeks minimum for reconsultations. You can comment at 14/05573/OUT. The supermarket has been reduced in size and turned through 90 degrees. The service yard has been moved away from Rocks Green Crescent and the number of car parking spaces has been reduced. Plans for the petrol filling station (PFS) are unchanged.
You can now recycle a partridge in a pear tree (also Christmas and New Year recycling dates in Ludlow)
As usual, kerbside collection dates have been changed over Christmas and the New Year. The one to watch out for is that next Monday’s collection of waste and recyclables has been brought forward to this coming Saturday. Remember you can now put out cardboard in the blue bag – so that’s an excuse to open Christmas presents early. You can also recycle your Christmas tree, though please do not put any drummers drumming in your green bin, especially if you get 12 of them as a gift.
